A Research on Demographic Parameters, Life Style and Sociopsychological Factors Related to Subjective Successful Aging of the Elderly in Rural Areas

This research examined the relationship between demographic parameters, life style and successful aging and the influence of social support and sociopyschological stress on successful aging in elderly people. 316 elderly people were sampled in rural area. With the aid of survey assistants, participants completed Psychosocial Wellbeing Index-Short Form(PWI-SF), Medical Outcome Study-Social Support survey(MOS-SSS) and Successful aging scale. Demographic , life style data were also collected. The collected data were analysed using multiple regression and AMOS statistical procedures. Age, drinking and social group predicted successful ageing significantly in elderly man, but work and exercise predicted successful ageing significantly in elderly women. Elderly men showed significantly lower sociopsychological stress, higher social support and successful aging than elderly women. Sociopsychological stress was negatively correlated with social support and successful aging, but social support was positively associated with successful aging. Social support had the partial mediation role between sociopsychological stress and successful aging. Finally, the implication and this study and the direction of future research were discussed.
